Alice Sarah Fry [f.2.6.9]

Alice Sarah Fry was the ninth child of Samuel Fry & Sarah Smeed born Jan-March 1860 at Lindfield, Sussex.

In 1861 Alice was living with her parents, 3 brothers & 3 sisters at Wiggs Farm, Withyham, Sussex

Alice was living at home in 1871& 1881 at Chartners Farm, Hartfield, Sussex with her parents & brothers & sisters.

On February 8th, 1888 Alice married Thomas Jesse Smallpiece at St Jude’s church, Chelsea.  At the time of the marriage Thomas was an innkeeper & he & Alice both gave their address as Lower Sloane St.  Witnesses at the wedding were Edmund Quickenden & Mary Bentley.  Thomas was the son of Thomas Smallpiece & Mary Jane Foster born Rotherfield & christened June 24th, 1849 at Frant.  Thomas Jesse had previously married Esther Quickenden (born 1846, at Ardingly) in 1870 at St Margaret, Westminster. Esther was the daughter of Elizabeth Fry [f.2.4] & James Quickenden & hence was Alice Sarah’s cousin. Thomas Jesse was initially a farmer in Godstone & later became an innkeeper at the Penshurst Station Inn, Chiddingstone where he & Esther were living in 1881 with their son Jesse (7). Esther died in 1887 aged 40.

Alice & Thomas' marriage

In 1891 Thomas & Alice were living at the Railway Hotel, Chiddingstone, Sevenoaks, Kent where Thomas was an innkeeper. They had 2 visitors - Edmund Quickenden, (61) a post master, & Mary Bentley, a widow (36), & a boarder Reginald Hucham (56) a retired army pensioner, & 2 servants.

Alice died on May 29th, 1895 aged 35, at the Railway Hotel, Penshurst Station, Sevenoaks & was buried on June 1st at Chiddingstone.  Administration of the will was granted to husband Thomas Jesse on July 23rd.  Alice’s effects were £468.

Alice’s husband Thomas remarried on April 14th, 1896 at Kennington, Lambeth, London. He married Mary Bentley, who as noted above was visiting at the time of the 1891 census!! Mary Bentley was in fact Mary Quickenden, the daughter of Edmund Quickenden who was also visiting at the time of the census. Mary had married Alfred Bentley in 1882 at Kensington. Alfred was visiting Edmund Quickenden & family at the time of the 1881 census!

Mary & Thomas were not traced in 1901.

By 1905 Thomas & Mary were living at Elthorne Mansions, Elthorne Rd, Islington & Thomas was caretaker there.  They were listed there until 1907.

In 1911 they were living at 81 Elthorne Rd, Islington, London. Thomas had no occupation.

Mary died on May 10th, 1913 at 81 Elthorne Rd, Upper Holloway, Islington, London, aged 57.  James Quickenden, carpenter, administered her estate & her effects were £604,16s.

Thomas, aged 75, was admitted to the Poor Law Institution, Islington from his home at 81 Elthorne Rd. Islington.  Here he died on April 6th, 1925, aged 75.  The cause of death was given as senility & pulmonary congestion.
